Comparison of radiation from different sources

Data source

The weather records are sourced for 77 sites from

The daily radiations (MJ/m^2) are downloaded from 1990-01-01 to 2022-12-31.

Sites

There are 79 sites sourced from Lilley et al (2019) across Australian grain belt.

Yearly total radiation

We calculated the yearly total radiation and then anomaly of tatal radiation from 1990 to 2022.

Among 4 data sources, the biggest difference occur since 2016. Then I plot the monthly total radiation since 2016.

Radiations from AGDC are higher than values from from PPD and Data Drill, and slightly lower than values from NASA POWER.

Winter radiation

As cereal crops are mainly growing during winter season, I calculate the total radiation and anomaly from May to October.

Anomaly of winter total radiation (MJ/m^2) from May to October

Summer radiation

I also calculate the total radiation and anomaly for summer crops from May to October.

Anomaly of winter total radiation (MJ/m^2) from November to April

Summary

Since 2016, radiations from SILO PPD and Data Drill are much lower than values from AGCD and NASA POWER and also lower than the long term average. We should be carefull to use them in the crop simulations. Radiations from BOM AGCD sound reasonable especially during winter.
